Educate Potential Clients on the Benefits of a Drug Free Workplace Program

The Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) Workplace section of its website features resources that drug and alcohol testing providers can use when trying to educate potential clients on the benefits of a drug free workplace program. The following research may be very compelling when presented to companies that fee they do not need such a program. For instance, alcohol-related job performance problems are caused not only by on-the-job drinking but also by heavy drinking outside of work.

Question & Answer: Excerpts from DATIA's Industry Forum

Question: Please clarify the significance of “.04” within §382.201. There is some confusion about when a driver tests above .02 and not over .04.

Answer:
Test results between .02 up to .039 only require the driver to be removed from safety sensitive duties for one shift up to twenty four hours. No need for a return to duty alcohol test. Results of .04 and above require removal from safety sensitive duties, but also require that the driver be sent to a substance abuse professional for an evaluation. The sap will send the report to the employer who must follow the saps direction to include a return to duty alcohol test and follow up testing as directed. (At least a minimum of 6 tests in the first year.)
