Emory University to Implement Employee Drug Testing Program
|
|
Employee resentment is growing at Emory University over a newly announced pre-employment drug-testing program. Opponents of the program cite that the policy is not University-wide (only staff members, and not faculty, are included) and allegedly infringes on the civil rights of staff members. The pre-employment drug-testing program was unveiled last semester and will affect anyone who applies for a staff position at the University. The program appears to have already weeded our drug users interested in working at the University, and administrators still support the new program, but some staffers feel betrayed because it was implemented without their input.

Question: Does anybody have information on the size of the drug & alcohol testing market?
Answer: In a report by Marketdata Enterprises (published in June 2002), the workplace drug and alcohol testing industry was valued at $737 Million per year for laboratory based testing. A 1% increase is estimated for laboratory testing as more employers move to point-of-care testing. The report also indicates that 40-50 million Americans are subject to drug testing, of which 20-25 million are actually tested.
Standard & Poor estimated the entire industry at $5.9 Billion per year in 1999.
