DATIA Interviewed by ABCs John Stossel
On October 1, 2003, John Stossel, co-anchor for ABC 20/20, arrived at DATIA headquarters to interview Laura Shelton concerning controversies associated with drug testing using hair specimens. While Mr. Stossel came prepared with pages of questions and notes concerning issues such as racial bias, after hearing only a few of DATIAs counter arguments on the subject, he concluded that racial bias was a non-issue and discontinued questions on the subject. Mr. Stossel further stated after the interview that the information provided by DATIA was very convincing and direct. Later this month, Mr. Stossel will be interviewing 2 Boston police officers who claim that their hair drug test results are incorrect due to racial bias and external contamination. While Mr. Stossel seemed convinced by many points made by DATIA, we will have to wait and see what happens in the editing room and final production of the piece by the shows producers. The 20/20 piece concerning hair testing is anticipated to run in mid to late November. DATIA will notify its members when we learn of the exact air date.

Question & Answer: Excerpts from the DATIA Forum

Question: We are a collection site and would like to know what other collection sites use for toilet bluing? We conduct numerous collections and need a continuous bluing agent. The blue drop-ins do not dissolve very well and we are having difficulty obtaining liquid blue. Would appreciate any suggestions.
Answer: We use blue food coloring. We buy it at a local restaurant wholesaler. It comes in a 20 oz container and can be diluted at a 10:1 ratio. It only costs about $4.00 per container and lasts about 6 months at an average of 15 collections per day. We mix it into a used water bottle which is excellent for mobile collections as well. One thing I have learned is that if a not-so-bright donor decided to dump any remaining bleach or oxidant into the toilet, the food coloring will disappear.
