Department of Education Announces Availability of Student Drug Testing Grant Applications
|
|
|
The Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS) today invited applications for new awards to develop and implement, or expand, school-based drug-testing programs for students. Approximately $6.5 million is available to local educational agencies (LEAs), and public and private entities. Grant applications are due August 16, and grants will be awarded on September 29. Click here for a full description of the grants and the application procedures.
The funds may be used to set up drug-testing programs in grades 6-12, and is limited to one or more of the following:
1. Students who participate in the school’s athletic program
2. Students who are engaged in competitive, extracurricular, school-sponsored activities; and
3. A voluntary testing program for students who, along with their parents or guardian, participate in the program.
In May, DATIA provided comments to OSDFS regarding these criteria for drug testing programs that may be performed using this grant money. The original wording was confusing, as it appeared to preclude students from volunteering, with the consent of their parent or guardian, to participate in a random drug testing program set-up for students in athletic or extracurricular activities. OSDFS agreed that the wording was confusing and clarified their intent, which is allow those schools that have mandatory programs for students in extracurricular or competitive activities to also have voluntary programs for the general student body. | Question & Answer From DATIA's Forum: |
|
Question: I am a current DATIA member, and I noticed that the "MEMBERS" section of the wesbite has two new pages. One page is titled "Create a Username and Password" and the other is "Log into your DATIA page." What is the purpose of these new pages?
Answer: DATIA members now have the ability to create their own usernames and passwords for the members-only sections of the website. In the past, these usernames and passwords were given to each member by DATIA.
Before you can create your new username and password, you must have your membership number and a valid email address on file with DATIA. Your membership number is printed on your membership certificate and on your membership renewal form.
Once you have made sure that you have these two items, please follow the steps below:
• Go to DATIA’s homepage at www.datia.org.
•Roll your cursor over the word “Members” on the left hand side of the screen (a drop down box will appear) or click on “Members” to be directed to the Members page of the website.
•Click on “Create a Username and password.”
•Enter your membership number in the box. (An email will be sent to the email address that you have on file with DATIA.)
• Open the email and use your temporary userID and password at the link provided in the email.
• Create your personal username and password. You will now be able to access all members-only sections of the website using this new information.
• You will also be able to access the "Log into your DATIA page" section of the website. This page allows you to view and make changes to your company name, contact names, address, phone and fax numbers, email address, and web address.
The username and password that DATIA members have been using for the past year will be cancelled and no longer valid on October 1, 2005.
