In a surprising statement during Tuesday's State of the Union Address, President Bush called on team owners, players, coaches, and union representatives to end the use of steroids in professional sports. This comes in the wake od harsh criticism concerning Major League Baseball's (MLB) recently implemented drug testing program. DATIA has been outspoken on the issue since talks concerning drug testing in the MLB first surfaced. The main criticism of MLB's program is that it has no teeth, and will do little to deter drug use. Bud Selig, MLB commissioner, announced in a statement on Wednesday that he believes the MLB program is a good start, but that the program needs to be more stringent. DATIA feels that President Bush's discussion of this issue during his State of the Union Address will bring the attention needed to the issue to affect positive change.
