The Department of Education Offers $10 Million Dollars In Grants to Implement or Expand Student Drug Testing Programs


Research shows that those who make it through their teenage years without using drugs are much less likely to start using them when they are older. Student drug testing is one program that dters young people from using drugs. Supreme Court rulings have allowed schools to randomly drug test athletes and students who participate in extracurricular activities, thereby giving schools another tool to complement their existing school-based drug prevention program.

Approximately $10 million in federal grants to implement or expand student drug testing programs will be available through the US Department of Education.

DATIA was informed this week that the application period will be open between mid-June and August 1, 2005. A Notice of Funds Available will be posted on the Department of Education's website at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/osdfs/index.html and DATIA will keep its members up-to-date.
